Annie R McEwen

Annie R McEwen is an American historical romance author. She is best known for her novels of love and mystery set in historical settings. Her latest book, The Corset Girls Unlaced (2025), launches a new series of historical romances.

Annie R McEwen has lived in six countries. Her early life included various experiences, from living in a canvas tent to a Georgian manor house. She pursued a career in history, gaining two degrees in the subject. Her career has been varied, including stints as a university lecturer, museum professional, and executive director of Florida's oldest historical organisation.

Before turning to writing, McEwen spent 25 years in the theatre as a dancer, actor, and singer. She performed for 17 years at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and toured for three years with shows for the Department of Defense. She also directed a youth theatre company for nearly 30 years and owned a chain of tattoo studios. She also worked as an antiques dealer.

McEwen cites Enid Bagnold's novel National Velvet as a major influence. She first read the book at twelve and immediately reread it several times. "Somewhere along the way, I decided I wasn't just crazy about horses, I was crazy about all things British," she says. This fascination with the story and the setting went on to shape her writing career.

McEwen's short stories have appeared in various anthologies. Her novels and other works have been published by Harbor Lane Books (USA), Bloodhound Books (UK), Rowan Prose Publishing and The Wild Rose Press.

Her books have won several awards. In 2022, she won the Page Turners Award in the romance category. She also won first and second place in the 2022 Romance Through the Ages Awards from the Romance Writers of America. The following year, she won the MAGGIE and Daphne du Maurier awards. In 2024, she was a finalist for the Page Turners Writing Award and shortlisted for a Writer's Mentorship Award.

McEwen's latest book, The Corset Girls Unlaced (2024), follows the lives of four working-class women in Victorian London. The series combines romance and suspense, exploring themes of survival and ambition. She describes it as "not the usual silk dresses and heated ballroom encounters" but a deeper look at the struggles and desires of women in the 1890s.

When not writing in her 1920s bungalow in Florida, Annie R McEwen travels to Wales and explores its castles.
