S.A. Cosby

Shawn Andre Cosby, or S.A. Cosby, is a critically acclaimed American author known for his gripping Southern noir crime novels. Cosby gained widespread recognition with his 2020 novel Blacktop Wasteland, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller and was named a New York Times Notable Book.

Shawn Andre Cosby was born in Newport News, Virginia. He graduated from Mathews High School in 1992 and attended Christopher Newport University as an English major, but did not graduate. Cosby also works as a mortuary assistant at the J.K. Redmond Funeral Home in Shacklefords.

S.A. Cosby began his writing career in the horror genre but was drawn to crime and mystery. He sees the genre as a way to tell stories unique to the African-American experience while "telling our stories in a way that resonates with people".

His first success, Blacktop Wasteland, a noir mystery novel, will be published by Flatiron Books in July 2020. The book won the ITW Thriller Award for Best Hardcover Novel, the Anthony Award, the Barry Award and the Macavity Award, among others.

His follow-up, Razorblade Tears (2021), was an instant New York Times bestseller and received widespread acclaim. The novel tells the story of two fathers—one black and one white—who seek revenge for their murdered sons while confronting their own prejudices and past mistakes. Razorblade Tears was shortlisted for major crime fiction awards, including the Edgar, Anthony, and Gold Dagger Awards, and was featured on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as part of Fallon's 2021 Summer Reads Book Club.

In 2023, Cosby published All the Sinners Bleed, his first foray into police procedurals, which follows a black sheriff in the South as he navigates a web of corruption, racial tension and a terrifying serial killer.
The novel was shortlisted for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and other prestigious awards, confirming Cosby's mastery of the crime genre. His next book, King of Ashes, is due out in 2025 and is eagerly anticipated by fans and critics alike.

Cosby's writing is characterised by its Southern Gothic atmosphere, compelling moral dilemmas, and raw emotional depth. He blends elements of classic noir with contemporary social commentary, exploring issues of race, class, and justice.

His distinctive style and authenticity have earned him comparisons to crime fiction legends such as Walter Mosley and Elmore Leonard.

Outside of writing, Cosby has spoken extensively about his journey to success, the challenges of balancing his craft with real-life responsibilities, and the influence of his Southern upbringing. A former wrestler and lifelong music lover, he draws inspiration from various sources, including personal experience, history, and music's rhythm and narrative structure.

S.A. Cosby currently resides in Gloucester, Virginia, on the York River.
