The volume was ambitious and impressive: it drew on the most talented Yiddish writers of the period—Abraham Goldfaden, Sholem Aleichem, Eliakum Zunzer, and Abraham Ber Gottlober, along with lesser-known talents with a local reputation in Odessa and nearby Kherson.
