Whip came to the Gay Riders Carnival fundraiser weekend looking for a good time, but what he found was infinitely better.

Whip always has a good time at the Gay Riders Carnival, and this year he’s hoping to meet up with some studs and top last year’s festivities. The last thing he expects when he walks into his cabin is to be nearly bowled over by a skinny lad with a bruised jaw.

Nick came to the Carnival with his so-called Master Dirk, but instead of having a good time, things moved quickly from bad to worse and Dirk responded to his safeword with a punch. Running away and hiding was Nick’s only option.

Broke, alone and not entirely sure how he’s going to get home, Nick thinks Whip is a dream come to life and he’s just waiting for the other shoe to drop. For his part, Whip is drawn to the sweet pup and falls hard for Nick over the course of the long weekend.

But what’s going to happen when the weekend is over?

“Everything?” Nicky nibbled on his sausage.

He chuckled, remembering their misspent youth. Remember figuring out they liked guys together and how exactly things worked. “Every damn thing.”

    “Are you lovers?”

“I don’t think you could call what we had being lovers. And it was over a long time ago.” He tilted Nicky’s face, insisting his boy look at him. “I don’t have any lovers or subs or anyone else in my life right now except for you.”

“You deserve to have someone to love. You’re a good guy.”

“Thank you, Nicky. Quite possibly I have found someone to love.” Certainly someone to care for. Someone with potential.

A shadow passed across Nicky’s face. “I’ll fuck it up somehow. It’s in my nature.”

“It’s in everyone’s nature, Nicky. It’s called being a human.”

Poor pup, thinking he needed to be perfect.

“You think so?” The question read as honest to him, not fishing for compliments.

“Yeah, I do. You’re allowed to fuck up, okay?” Asking for perfection was guaranteeing failure and Whip wasn’t into unattainable goals.

Nicky pinked, ducked his head. “I’d really rather not.”

Whip laughed. “Yeah, well, wouldn’t we all.”

Trig came back with enough poutine to feed a small army. “Wouldn’t we all what?”

Whip’s mouth watered at the sight of all those fries covered in dark gravy and ooey gooey melted cheese curds

    had been reading his thoughts.

“Absolute favorite?” Whip had to think about that because truly, he liked food.

    “Yes. The very best.”

“It’s gotta be roast beef and mashed potatoes with gravy and roasted carrots.” That would be his pick if forced to choose. Which it seemed Nicky had just done.

“Oh, yeah? I know how to make that. I like that a lot.”

“Then when we get back, you’ll have to make it for me.” Well, it looked like he’d made up his mind about that while he hadn’t even been aware he’d been mulling it over.

Nicky looked at him, surprise painted on his pup’s face. “When we get back?”

“Sure. You’ll stick around if you’ve got someone to protect you from Dirk, right? Instead of going up north?”

“You want me around? I don’t have a job yet.” Worry was beginning to creep back into Nicky’s eyes.

“You’ll find something. I’m sure. Until you do, I hate household chores and you can earn your keep.” There. Quid pro quo, so the kid didn’t see it as charity.

“Oh… Are you for real? You’re like an angel in leather who showed up just when I needed you.”

Whip snorted. “I’m not an angel, pup.”

“You’re starting to seem like my angel.”

“I suppose I can live with that.” Smiling, Whip put his hand on Nicky’s ass and moved them in the right direction. He loved how Nick felt against him, how that tight ass moved.

They found a place selling sausages and peppers with thick rolls and butter. Once they had their food, they

“Go on and have some more, pup.” He knew Nicky had to be hungry. The burgers they’d indulged in had been ages ago.

“Are you sure? You’re a big guy. You probably need ten times the calories I do.”

“Oh, we’re going to have more than just the popcorn, pup. Don’t worry about it.”

“Yes, Sir. Thank you.” Nicky took a handful, nibbled.

Whip found himself watching the kid while the music played on. He could fall for this pup. He absolutely could. There was something about Nicky, something gentle and tender and begging for domination. He wanted to protect Nicky from the assholes who wanted to hurt him. And he felt a pull to give Nicky what he needed.

“So what do you do?” Whip asked. “You said something about a bar?”

“I waited tables, yeah. I’m going to… I don’t know. Hitch a ride north, find something.”

“Yeah? Sudbury? North Bay? Why there?” Whip found himself wanting to forbid it, wanting to tell Nicky he’d take care of the pup.

“I can’t go back where I was. You know?”

“That man doesn’t own you. You need to remember that. I’m from east of here, though. Still, there’s plenty of places to work in Ottawa.” He held back from outright inviting Nicky to live with him. He’d known the pup what? A day? He did that and he’d scare Nicky into running, he bet.

“Yeah? That might work. We’ll see where I end up, I guess. What do you do?”

“Would you believe I’m an EMT?” Taking care of people he’d just met was kind of his day job. Of course it was
