The actions of our lips and tongues are outward signs of a more momentous inward shift: I accept you – accept you so much that I will take a big risk with you. Sexual excitement is the loneliness of the Self powerfully, if briefly, alleviated.

Sexual excitement is psychological. It’s not so much what our bodies are doing that gets us turned on; it’s what happens in our brains that matters.

However, the sense that we need to hide, deny and bury key elements of who we are is not very good for us. As psychoanalysis has stressed, when we repress things that are important, they make themselves heard in other ways.
