Before 1676, nobody had a clue about cells, because nobody had ever seen them. Then a guy named Antoni van Leeuwenhoek peered at a slice of animal tissue through a stronger-than-ever-before microscope, and to his great surprise, he discovered that living things were actually composed of tiny little “rooms,” which he called cells.
