Nick Mamatas

Nick Mamatas is an American horror, sci-fi, and fantasy author. He is also an editor for Haikasoru's line of translated Japanese science fiction novels. Nick's fiction and editorial work have been nominated for the Stoker, Hugo, World Fantasy, and Shirley Jackson awards.

Nick Mamatas was born on Long Island, New York. His parents are Greeks from the island of Icaria.

Mamatas attended Stony Brook University and New School University and then completed the MFA program in creative writing at Western Connecticut State University.

Nick financed his early writing career by producing term papers for college students, which gained him some renown when he described this experience in an essay for Drexel University's e-magazine, The Smart Set.

He started in nonfiction in the late '90s, and his work has appeared in Razor Magazine, The Village Voice, Spex, Clamor, and BenBella Books' Smart Pop Books anthologies.

Nick Mamatas is famous for the Lovecraftian Beat road novel Move Under Ground (2005), nominated for both the Bram Stoker and International Horror Guild awards, and the Civil War ghost story Northern Gothic. It was declared one of the best Cthulhu Mythos stories not written by Lovecraft by RPG designer Kenneth Hite in the book Cthulhu 101.

He is also a Bram Stoker Award nominee for the suburban nightmare novel Under My Roof (2007).

Mamatas now has about ten novels, more than thirty short stories, and hundreds of articles.

Nick Mamatas currently lives in the California Bay Area.
