    right.
I knew from experience that the music wasn’t piped through an invisible sound system. That wouldn’t do for my mother. If this was similar to years past, I suspected that the grand piano was currently being played in conjunction with the rest of a quartet, historically, consisting of a string bass or cello, a violin, and a harp.
Forcing smiles and nods, I acknowledged the stares and greetings coming my way.
“You made Arnold’s night,” I whispered.
By Van’s smirk, I was most certain he knew what I meant. No other guest would offer their hand in greeting to the help. It was the way it was, without question. Then again, Van didn’t employ help, not in the traditional sense of the word, even calling himself a minimalist in that category.
If he were a minimalist, my mother was the opposite—pretentious.
Van’s deep tenor cut through the background noise. “I save my smugness for negotiations and boardrooms. How long has Arnold worked for your family?”
    “Since I was young.”
    “And in pigtails?”
    I grinned. “Yes.”
“And has he done his job?”
    “Exceedingly well.”
“Then by all means, the man has earned a simple handshake.”
Our conversation stopped as a young man in a tuxedo approached with a tray of crystal flutes filled with champagne. I didn’t recognize him, which meant that he was one of the catering team. It also meant that he didn’t know me any more than he knew any other guest.
After taking our drinks, I led Van toward the back terrace. Despite the winter weather, there would be a large canopy with sides and dozens of tall propane heaters to give the illusion of warmth. It was also the location of the queen of the manor.
I continued my smiles and nods and saying hellos as we worked our way through the crowd.
Van leaned closer, his whisper near my ear. “You introduced me to Arnold, but not to any other guests.”
“I care more about Arnold. These people are staring at me and thinking about how instead of here, we should be at my wedding. Whether they know about Skylar or not, seeing me here with you, they’re jumping to their own conclusions.”
    “Their opinions are irrelevant.”
    I wished I could agree.
We paused as the hallway gave way to the expanse of the rear living room. A large perfectly shaped Christmas tree decorated with colorful lights and large ornaments was near the far end next to the fireplace. The usual pictures that donned the mantel were missing, replaced by more holiday décor.
This room was wider than it was deep, spanning the width of the house with multiple couches and groupings of chairs. There were also three sets of tall double-arched glass doors that led out onto the terrace. As if it were summer instead of the final day of the year, all the doors were opened.
I’d been right about the canopy.
Inside, the white tent was filled with round tables covered in linen tablecloths with tall centerpieces consisting of vases of twigs decorated with tiny white, silver, and gold lights. Some guests were already seated outside while others stood or sat

    corect.
"Da.”

mine. I then watched as guests whispered at the wrinkled dress and messed hair. I’d done it because I could, and in hindsight, I realized that I’d allowed my could to outweigh the repercussions.
It was a conquest and nothing more.
The difference between then and now had nothing to do with how much I wanted to fuck Julia at this moment. The difference was that Julia wasn’t a conquest to flaunt and even more importantly, she deserved better.
    I could, but I wouldn’t.
Julia was mine. That fact didn’t need to be displayed by any means other than the ring on her finger. I also wouldn’t because with time I saw that those whispers and looks from years ago were demeaning toward the woman I fucked.
    Yes, I’d made many mistakes.
The last thing I wanted to do was make them with Julia.
With Julia, I wanted the opposite of what I’d wanted in the past. I wanted her to shine because from my view, out of all the guests downstairs, she was the star, a red nova to be envied, not ridiculed.
When our kiss ended, I said, “Thank you for showing me your room.”
“No fucking?” Her blue eyes swirled with desire.
“Once I get you back to the hotel, plan to ring in the new year as you come and scream without the threat of interruption.”
“I’m going to hold you to that.” Taking a deep breath, she turned a complete circle. “Before we go back to Ashland, I should come back here and decide what to have shipped to your house.”
“Our house,” I reminded her as I walked to her bedside stand. “You were living here before you came to Wisconsin?”
“I was. I know it’s lame to live with my parents. I missed my own apartment. I had one in college, but with the wedding and the house Skylar and I were building…” Julia gasped as I reached for the handle of the top drawer of her bedside stand. “Van, stop. What are you doing?”
Even in the red high heels, she was next to me in less than a second.
“Let’s go downstairs,” she said, tugging at my arm.
“Oh, I was curious what this drawer might contain.” She stood in the way, stopping the drawer from opening. I lifted her chin. “You see, I’ve heard stories about an unfulfilled sex life, and I was curious if my sexy vixen took matters into her own hands.”
“You know I did. I showed you.”
    “Did you have help?”
“Jeez.” Julia’s complexion paled as she sunk to the side of her bed and covered her face with her hands. “Yes, there’s a vibrator in there.”
Tugging her hands away, I crouched in front of her. “I won’t look if you promise to be sure it’s in your things to be moved to Ashland.”
“Oh my God. Why does that turn me on?”
“Because, Ms. McGrath, I found the most perfect woman in the world, and I plan on keeping her.”
“I’ll be sure to pack it.” She stood. “If we don’t get back downstairs, there’ll be rumors.”
I offered her my arm. “Instead of rumors, let’s show them the real thing.”
Julia didn’t lead me to the back staircase. Following the hallway toward the landing, Julia led me to the grand staircase, the one overlooking the foyer. As we reached the top of the

a mea.
Când sărutul nostru s-a încheiat, am spus: "Mulțumesc că mi-ai arătat camera ta.”
Trăgându-i mâinile, m-am ghemuit în fața ei.

    A threat.
My appetite disappeared not only with Van’s words but the seriousness in his expression. “Van, I’ll use Michael for the drives and” —I shook my head— “if you want one of those other men to follow me, at least now I know who they are, and they won’t creep me out.”
“I should have explained earlier. That’s on me.”
I set my plate back on the table as Van resumed his seat at the other end of the sofa, his wine glass in hand. “Tell me why I would be threatened.”
“Me.” When I remained quiet, he went on, “I’ve said it before. My involvement with you and with Wade Pharmaceutical has drawn attention. Right now, there’s a well-funded SPAC trying to purchase Wade shares. I’ve had my people digging. My people are damn good, and we’re still coming up blank on who exactly is involved in the SPAC. Just yesterday they acquired the shares recently purchased by Wolfe Acquisitions.”
“I saw the memo,” I said, thankful I was receiving real-time information. “GreenSphere still has only five percent of shares, the same as Aphrodite Corporation. I don’t know if we know who Aphrodite is either.”
“Five percent seems inconsequential,” Van said. “Why obtain them?”
“I don’t know. So, you think GreenSphere consists of people who would threaten me?”
“I’m concerned that whoever has invested in GreenSphere is keeping their connection hidden. There are other factors at play. I’ve been upfront with you about my feelings regarding the Butler family. While we’re playing relatively nice concerning Wade, I’m working behind the scenes. My people have gotten information regarding a few of Marlin Butler’s other investments. An anonymous tip was made last Friday morning to the SEC. From what I’ve been told, they’ve taken notice.”
My eyes opened wide. “The Security and Exchange Commission. You turned in Marlin?”
    “The tip was anonymous.”
I took a deep breath. “If Marlin is involved in something illegal, won’t that bring undue scrutiny on Wade?”
“I’ve looked through the information you have with one goal in mind, to find something illegal at Wade. It doesn’t exist. There are some interesting and maybe questionable practices from a shareholder’s point of view. Yet nothing illegal. If Marlin finds himself in the hot seat with the SEC, his best move is to sell.”
“And you want to buy.” It wasn’t a question.
“I do.” Van’s eyebrows quirked. “Speaking of Butlers, why didn’t you tell me that Logan Butler spoke with you at the party?”
“Uncle Logan.” I shook my head. “I didn’t say anything because there was nothing to say other than he gave me an odd feeling.” I reached for a water bottle and twisted the cap. “It’s weird. I’ve known him my whole life but there was something about his comments the other night that gave me the creeps.”
    Van didn’t speak.
“It was probably more me than him. I have this preconceived notion that all the Butlers hate me, and he was too nice. Does that make sense?”
“Logan Butler isn’t nice. I’m sorry he had the chance to get to

Are sens?”
