Legends of the Bastille by Frantz Funck Brentano is a gripping, story rich exploration of the most infamous prison in France, written by an historian who worked directly with the Bastille archives and set out to separate dramatic legend from documented reality. Instead of repeating revolutionary propaganda or later sensational myths, Funck Brentano takes you inside the fortress as it truly functioned: how it was built, how it was administered, what daily life was like for prisoners, and why the Bastille became such a potent symbol in the public imagination.

You will encounter the enduring mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask, traced through records and testimony; the stories of celebrated writers imprisoned within its walls, including Voltaire and Diderot; the dramatic career of Latude, the would be escape artist whose tale reads like a thriller; and the charged events of 14 July 1789, when the Bastille’s fall echoed far beyond Paris and into history. The result is not a dry academic study, but a vivid journey through political intrigue, human resilience, and the making of a revolutionary legend, perfect for listeners who love French history, true stories, and the hidden mechanics behind famous events.
