Before You Finance the Upgrade is written for consumers who are weighing whether to finance a new phone, car, or piece of everyday equipment, and who want a clear method for comparing what each option actually costs. The book works through how a monthly payment is constructed, what it can conceal, and how to calculate the full price of any financed purchase before committing to it.

The early sections show how advertised prices and monthly figures can understate the real cost of borrowing. Readers learn how interest accumulates on installment loans, how dealer finance offices can introduce fees and add-ons after a price has already been agreed on, and how depreciation erodes the resale value of whatever they currently own.

A dedicated section presents a repair-or-replace framework that gives readers a structured way to hold the total cost of a financed replacement against the cost of keeping and servicing what they already have. A separate section covers opportunity cost, examining what the money committed to monthly payments is no longer free to do elsewhere.

The book applies these methods to three common categories: smartphones, cars, and everyday equipment such as laptops and appliances. Each category is illustrated with a worked scenario showing how the numbers come together for a realistic purchase.

A five-number test consolidates the full framework into a single check a reader can apply to any purchase in a short amount of time. A glossary of financing terms and a blank total-cost worksheet are included as reference tools readers can return to each time a new financing offer is in front of them.
