I have worked all over the U.S. (including some fantastic field years in Alaska) and in some parts of Europe. I am saddened that the human species has never really developed the respect for its own planet that it should but I attribute this to our life spans, which are quite short in the face of things, and to our primate ancestry or biology. These two factors make us inherently selfish and unable to truly plan or care about future generations. Our short life spans plus a still primitive brain make it impossible, I feel, to "save the planet" meaning the human species is a tragedy unfolding. We will go extinct but we did not have to.
