Charlie Wells is a London-based journalist who writes about daily life and public change. He is a staff editor and reporter at Bloomberg News. He is best known for What Happened to Millennials (2025), which defends millennials.
Wells studied at Harvard University from 2006 to 2010. He earned a BA in Social Studies and East Asian Studies. He then studied at the University of Cambridge from 2010 to 2011. He completed an MPhil in Modern European History.
After his studies, Wells worked as a journalist at The Economist for four years. He then spent five years at the Wall Street Journal. He later joined Bloomberg News as a staff editor and reporter. He writes on how the economy, society, technology, and politics shape everyday life. He is a regular contributor to Bloomberg television and radio. He lives in London. He has described himself in personal terms: “he’s a millennial whose life turned out a little bit different than he once imagined.”
In 2025, he published What Happened to Millennials (2025). He frames the book as a reply to standard labels. He writes, “You’ve heard the litany of obsession with avocado toast.” He argues that “these takes are lazy.” He adds that they miss both diversity and causes.
The book links millennial life to recent US history. He writes that millennials “grew up in boom times that went bust.” He points to the 1990s growth and new tools that “never quite came.” He also links the cohort to media change and culture conflict. He notes that CNN and Fox News rose during the cohort’s youth. He asks, “How did all of these factors shape our generational identity and fate?”
The book presents five case studies. These include 'the first DREAMer' and 'a polyamorous tech worker'. Wells also writes about a veteran who is struggling with opioid addiction. The other subjects are a 9/11 child and a stay-at-home dad. Through these individuals, he illustrates how their generation has reached midlife. He also presents where we can — and must — go from here.
