The Dispatcher's Voice of Calm

The Dispatcher's Voice of Calm
A DBT Guide for 911 Dispatchers on Managing Emotional Reactions and Guiding Callers Through Crisis

Before breakfast, you hear the worst minute of someone's life.

At lunch, a noise complaint. In the afternoon, you help coordinate a pursuit. Near the end of shift, a routine administrative call.

The headset does not care what came before. The next line lights up anyway.

That is the whole shape of the job in one sentence, and it is why this book exists.

Emergency communications asks you to make rapid judgments on information that arrives incomplete, distorted, emotional, and sometimes flatly contradictory. Callers scream. Or whisper. Or curse. Or dissociate. They give you the wrong address, argue with your instructions, and go silent at the precise moment clarity matters most.

And through all of it you are expected to listen, document, question, prioritize, coordinate — and keep a usable voice.

Not a calm-sounding voice. A usable one. There's a difference, and the difference is most of what nobody trains you on.

That gap between sounding steady and actually being steady is where dispatchers burn out, and it's the gap Lysander Berg spends this book closing. Not by asking you to feel less. By giving you skills for what to do with what you already feel, while the line is still open.

Inside

A practical guide you can use this week: scenes you'll recognize, steps you can try today, and language that does not insult the problem.

Part I — Setting the Stage: Understanding the Dispatcher's World and DBT Foundations

Chapter 1. The Unseen Heroes: the unique demands of 911 dispatch.

Chapter 2. Why DBT? A powerful toolkit for dispatchers — and why a skill-based approach beats “just coping.”

Chapter 3. The Dispatcher's Voice of Calm: an introduction. What does calm really mean in a crisis?

Throughout: what this looks like in ordinary days, concrete scripts for the next hard conversation, and the first move that actually helps.

After a demanding call, when operations allow, try a brief internal debrief:
Name one fact about what happened.
    Name one emotion you noticed.
    Name one physical sensation.
Identify one thing you did effectively.
Identify one thing you can learn without attacking yourself.
Take one deliberate breath before the next task.
Two minutes will not process a major incident. That is not the purpose. The exercise gives your nervous system a small marker: that event happened, and now I am here.

A practical sequence is Notice, Settle, Direct.
Notice. What is happening in you right now? Tight throat, racing thoughts, anger, fear, blankness, tunnel vision?
Settle. Use the smallest effective intervention. One long exhale. Drop your shoulders. Place both feet on the floor. Name the next fact you need.
Direct. Return to the task. Ask the next question. Give the next instruction. Document the next relevant detail.
