Knowing their top five talent themes is not enough to change a person’s career path. They must take action to develop those talents into strengths.

If children were not forced to waste time on the subjects they are not good at and could spend all their time in school working only on their strengths, they could potentially become great at whatever it is they are best at.

when those strengths are properly develop, only then will the person truly appreciate how important it was to learn what their talents were and to see what a difference knowing can make in their lives.

It is important for a person to learn how to properly apply their strengths once they have identified the themes under which their natural talents lie.

Some people, like Michael Jordan, are lucky to discover their strengths early in life and have the opportunity to develop it. However, for others, individual strengths might not be as obvious.

beneficial for a person to find someone else with strengths different from their own so that this other person could alert them when they are losing something in their blind spot

Just as a person must learn to work with certain of their weaknesses, they must also be aware of blind spots created by their strengths.

There are many natural talents, but each person can only be good at a few things

there are times when a person’s weaknesses are so essential to their everyday life that they must learn to work with them. An example he offers is when a person is not good at organization, but they have a job or a busy life that requires some organization in order for that person to arrive at appointments on time or finish projects by a deadline. Rath offers several ways of working with these weaknesses, including working with someone else whose strength is organization.

Although it is preferable that a person work only within their strengths, there are often times when it is necessary for a person to learn how to work with their weaknesses as well.

It is necessary to discover and develop strengths in order to understand what career path a person should take.

Combining strengths is a good way to not only avoid workplace stress, but it is also a good way to experience success. When people who have different dominant strengths join together to use each other’s strength, it often leads to greater success than one person might have achieved on his home if forced to work with a strength and a weakness. An example of this might be Steve Jobs and his partner at Apple’s genesis, Steve Wozniak. Steve Jobs was a brilliant businessman who always seemed to know exactly what the consumer wanted. Wozniak was a brilliant electronics engineer and computer programmer who developed the Apple I and Apple II computers. Using both their strengths, Jobs and Wozniak founded Apple Computer with a third partner, Ronald Wayne.

There are 34 themes Clifton and his team identified. These themes were Clifton’s attempt at creating a classification of talents. These themes cover many of the most common talents, given names such as achiever, futuristic, and woo. Most people have many talents, but only five of them will be dominant. Most people will have a unique list of talents that are dominant within their character, meaning their list of five will be different from anyone else’s. It is possible a person could share the same top five talents with another person, but each person’s talents will likely be in a different order of dominance.

While StrengthsFinder measures talent, it is under the goal of ultimately building people’s strengths

    StrengthsFinder measures talent, not strengths.

Modern society appreciates a cookie-cutter style of success. Everyone wants to be like Bill Gates or Angelina Jolie or Hillary Clinton. People feel they need someone to look up to, to admire and emulate. Very few people aspire to simply be the best them they can be. However, every person is unique. If people spent more time developing their strengths rather than working on their weaknesses, there would likely be more people like Bill Gates, Angelina Jolie, or Hillary Clinton in the world, only these would not be duplicates, but unique individuals who have succeeded in their own right.

a society that is obsessed with weakness, people feel a certain pressure to fix their weaknesses
