The application of the word kitab to the Holy Qur’an occurs in very early revelations, and the use of the word shows clearly that the Qur’an was from the first meant to be a complete book and one that existed not only in the memory of men but also in visible characters on writing material, for otherwise it could not be called al-Kitab.
