Only Love

The father of the demure but beautiful Iola Herne, an imperious Army General not given to romance or sentiment, is overjoyed to receive a request for her hand in marriage from the ageing Lord Stoneham, the Lord Lieutenant of the County and the scion of local Society.
But Iola is appalled by the prospect of marrying an old man whom she does not and never could love.
To escape her Fate she runs away to seek the advice of her beloved Nanny — only to find that that Nanny herself is on the brink of a new adventure with an exciting new job caring for a young heiress on a luxury yacht in the glamorous South of France.
Tragically, though, Nanny dies in the night and, on an impulse, Iola takes her job and travels to Monte Carlo in her place.
Instantly she is captivated by her charge, the precocious five year old Lucy — but dislikes her handsome but haughty father, the wealthy Sir Wolfe Renton, who is dismissive of Iola’s inspiring ideas of teaching his daughter and abrasive in his tone.
But, when Lucy is kidnapped by French vagabonds, it is Iola who holds the key to her rescue and, as he then suddenly realises, to his heart!

"Iola looked up from her plate on which were several slices of underdone beef." 😵🤢🤢🤢 gross

“It’s the most exciting news I have ever heard!” she cried. “Just think, Iola, you will not only be the wife of the Lord Lieutenant, but you will be able to go to the Opening of Parliament wearing a tiara!” - that is literally all the ambitious ladies lived for 😏

“I will tell you later,” the General replied in a repressive tone. “Luncheon should be ready by now and you know I like my meals on time.” “Yes, of course, Alexander,” his sister had said meekly. - he's a complete bully.

Her mother was beautiful, kind and loving when she had the time, but she was often away from home or, when at home, too busy to spend time in the nursery. But Nanny was always there. - so nanny basically raised her 😑

“Well, you may think it is very forward and modern of me and almost like being a Suffragette,” Margaret Herne replied, “but I do think it’s slightly degrading for a woman to have to ask a man, whether he is her father or her husband, for everything she needs, even a packet of hairpins.” - that's annoying!

She supposed he would kiss her and they would sleep together in a double bed as her father and mother had done. - they slept on the same bed?? Fascinating! Usually, these classes and higher slept in separate beds or different rooms.

“He must be old enough to be your grandfather!” Nanny exclaimed. “Nasty I calls it, an old man runnin’ after a girl of your age.” - true!

“Things have changed since I was a young man,” the General trumpeted. “To be accepted at Court in those days you had to have a decent line of ancestry behind you, besides having served your country with distinction.” - the General would have a fit if he knew Harry has "left" the royal family lol.

“Wolfe Renton!” he had gone on. “What a name to start with! He may be as rich as they say he is, but I cannot believe that any man could make as much money in England today and make it honestly!” - the same way the british empire pillaged, robbed and enslaved other nations??

She had read about the enormous pheasant shoots that were arranged for the King and his friends - who doesn't love an entire afternoon filled with the massacre of innocent lives for the pleasure of utter wretches!

On the yacht she had been shown many gadgets that he had personally invented and had learnt that he had, in fact, practically designed the whole vessel himself. - lol that made me laugh. He "practically designed" ...uh huh. Sure...

“If you lost everything you possess,” Iola said, “I should still love you – not only as much as I do now, but perhaps – more because then I might be of some – use to you.” “I think – Lucy should have brothers and sisters to – play with – and if I could give you a son – I would feel that I could be very – useful.” - 😑🙄 "useful" like a baby making machine...
